Beginners Yoga Drop-in

This ongoing course is designed to give you a firm foundation from which to learn the basics of Ashtanga (power) Yoga. The first classes will focus on teaching the two sun salutations, A & B, then adding the standing postures as your strength & stamina builds over the weeks. At the end of each class you will learn the finishing sequence, a relaxing warm down to the practice. You can drop in to these classes, but do send Karen an email to let her know you’re coming.

A class dedicated for those who are just starting out, bringing on new people each week and progressing through standing postures. As practitioners get comfortable with the basics, they can ‘graduate’ from the beginners class and move onto the led Ashtanga.

Led Ashtanga (intermediate level)

This class allows experienced Ashtanga yoga practitioners to get on with their primary series yoga at a faster pace and introduces more of the seated postures. Some experience of Ashtanga yoga is required to attend this class as it is the next step up from the Beginners level. This class is led by the teacher and involves some physical adjustments.

Mysore style (self-practice)

This class allows experienced Ashtanga yoga practitioners to get on with their primary series yoga in the traditional way. The teacher does not verbally instruct the class. Rather, the teacher is free to float around the room and provide individual instruction and physical adjustments. This is the format best suited for practicing Ashtanga Yoga and practitioners should work up to this level by memorising the sequence and practicing regularly. At St. Mary’s, you will be adjusted by either Chris Conn (Tues) or Greig Stark (Weds).

Power Yoga

An intense vinyasa class that begins with sun salutations and proceeds directly into fast-moving, improvisational standing postures that are designed to bring on the heat. An intermediate level class, you should have some prior experience with yoga and a suitable fitness level to fully enjoy the experience. Expect a high-energy session that emphasizes strength and vigor and usually lasts for 75 minutes.
