Krista Shirley

Since the very first day I stepped foot on a yoga mat, Ashtanga yoga has and continues to enrich my life – spiritually, mentally, and physically.

Teaching Yoga

In 2004, during my senior year in college, I realized that my passion, dedication, and love for Ashtanga yoga far surpassed my desire to go to graduate school for Nautical Archaeology. After I graduated from College, I devoted myself wholly to yoga.

My passion for Ashtanga yoga begins with my own daily practice, and from there I find the love, inspiration, and dedication to teach this beautiful tradition to others. My approach to teaching yoga follows my own personal practice: Ashtanga yoga is an ancient tradition that is to be respected, embraced, and nurtured. Once you focus on and surrender to your practice you will truly feel and see a growth and transformation from within.

Krista just arrived in in Edinburgh after another trip to Mysore, India studying at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute. We are delighted Krista is here guest teaching with the Coop until the end of December. Krista will then travel back to India before heading back to her home in Orlando, Florida, where she teaches Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga

Krista gives thanks to her teachers Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, Sharath Rangaswamy, and Saraswati Rangaswamy. She is blessed to be able to visit India each year and study at AYRI. Since 2006 she has spent a full calendar year studying at the shala dedicating time to her personal practice and her growth as a teacher. Krista feels it is her duty to teach others because she has been so enriched by this practice.

Krista has also had the fortune to study Ashtanga Yoga with David Williams, Manju Jois, Beryl Bender Birch, David Swenson, O. P. Tiwari, and Paul Dallaghan. She maintains contact with her teachers so her own practice may continue to grow on the right path under their tutelage.

Krista completed her first Ashtanga Yoga teacher training with Manju Jois in the summer of 2003 and then went on to Thailand in November of 2004 to complete a month intensive 200 hour Yoga Alliance teacher training with Paul Dallaghan in Ko Samui, Thailand. In August of 2006 Krista returned to Thailand to study with Paul and work towards her advanced 500 hour Yoga Alliance teacher training certificate.

Krista is RYT and ERYT certified to teach yoga through Yoga Alliance. Krista holds current CPR and AED certifications through the American Red Cross, and Blood Bourne Pathogens, and First Aid Certification through the American Safety and Health Institute.
